  24. You can spend big bucks licensing GDOS from Atari, you can buy something like
  25. Degas Elite that comes with some version or other of GDOS (there have been
  26. several), or you can forget GDOS altogether and buy G+Plus from Codehead
  27. Software...

  29. Atari Corp spend years and years fumbling around trying to get GDOS to
  30. work right, and never did manage to fix it.  Charles F. Johnson and John
  31. Eidsvoog (who ARE Codehead) spent a few WEEKS reverse-engineering GDOS,
  32. figuring out how it worked, and more importantly, how it was SUPPOSED to
  33. work.  They then wrote a replacement for GDOS which not only worked the way
  34. GDOS was supposed to work, but ran FASTER to boot.

  36. The documentation for G+Plus even comes with a nice tutorial about the way
  37. GDOS works...   FAR more than you'd normally get from Atari Corp.

  39. Once again, forget about the Atari product, and get the third-party product..

  82. Well, I used to think like this too.  I figured, "Great, I save few bucks
  83. now and I figure out all the little problems on my own and put up with
  84. a lot of ragged software."  This was all well and good until I actually
  85. got a Mac IIcx.  Now I have speed, support from the manufacturer, oodles
  86. of support from third party software companies and hardware companies,
  87. easy RAM upgrades, easy hardware add-ons, etc.  Now that I have one,
  88. I think it was worth the up-front cost to avoid all the later
  89. exasperation and disappointment.  Anyway, I guess the old addage holds
  90. true:  You get what you pay for.

  118. And GEM and GEMDOS haven't changed much in the past 2 years, either.
  119. Let's see, TOS 1.4 added one new GEM call, and changed the file
  120. selector? Yes, it's nice to see more comprehensive documentation come
  121. out, but it isn't *necessary*. Your ability to write GEM programs
  122. hasn't disappeared because there aren't any new books describing the
  123. old calls.

  128. Right. But the complaint I've seen here so far is, "Atari should bring
  129. out docs because the ones we have are shit!" Atari bringing out docs
  130. won't put ST books into Waldenbooks. Only bigger sales of ST books
  131. will put ST books into Waldenbooks. The problem you have with ST books
  132. is the same one you have with ST software and ST peripherals.

  136. No. Someday you might learn that people can disagree with you without
  137. being paid by the evil opposition. I criticize Atari Corp about a lot
  138. of things, but at least I make sure I'm not spewing hot air when I
  139. make a criticism.

  146. GDOS calls are documented in my version 1 Abacus book. The major
  147. problem with them is that they aren't labeled as such. However, it
  148. seems other programmers haven't been unable to write GDOS
  149. applications.  GDOS printer drivers I have not seen documented, but
  150. allegedly Atari sells such documentation. I'd love to see 3rd party
  151. documentation about this. Definately a small hole that needs filling.

  155. Amazing how we can take the same facts and come to a different
  156. conclusion. Maybe now you understand why I like ZNet a lot better than
  157. I like ST Report. And why I read the Washington Post instead of the
  158. World Weekly News.

  173. Regarding the  "Vault and Key" hard drive backup system..
  174.  
  175. I just used the Vault to back up my 20Meg hard drive, and later restore it..
  176.  
  177. No problems at all...  I particularly liked the fact that it ran well with
  178. only 512K, and that it does "incremental" backups between Full backups.
  179.  
  180. The only problem with the "Key" was that I had to remember to specify the
  181. main folder that all the other files and folders were in on the backup
  182. disks, or I'd get one large folder called "FEBC" (Feburary backup of C:)
  183. on the hard drive...   not a problem with the "Key" program really, just
  184. my having to remember how to run it...

  205. Actually, according to Bob Brodie of Atari Corp, much of the STart article
  206. on the TT was inaccurate, based on obsolete information.  Apparently no
  207. one at STart bothered to contact Atari prior to publication to verify the
  208. content of the article.

  210. The TT is STILL not finalized, so *anything* you read about its specification
  211. or capabilities is "rumor"...

  213. Maybe *someday* our children will be able to tell us what a TT is really
  214. like...
